Inhumans lead Anson Mount has been cast as Captain Christopher Pike, in command of the USS Enterprise, for Star Trek: Discovery’s second season, which begins shooting shortly.

Pike was the captain immediately prior to James T. Kirk, although the only member of the crew known to have served under both is Spock. The part was played by Jeffrey Hunter in the original Star Trek pilot, The Cage – footage from which was used in the two-part original series tale The Menagerie – and a crippled Pike was portrayed by Sean Kenney. For the 2009 reboot, Bruce Greenwood was Pike, a role he repeated in Star Trek Into Darkness.

Star Trek Discovery is expected to return early next year. Mount’s casting would appear to confirm that the low-rating Inhumans is not returning for a second season.
