David Ogden Stiers, known to genre fans for his role on the TV version of The Dead Zone, has died aged 75.
The news was announced by his agent.
In addition to appearing as Reverend Gene Purdy on the Stephen King adaptation, Stiers worked on Star Trek: The Next Generation, ALF, and a pilot for Justice League of America as the Martian Manhunter. His voice work included George Lucas’ THX-1138, and eight Disney movies including Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Lilo & Stitch. He also voiced the Penguin for Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman.
Among his other talents, he was a renowned conductor of orchestras around the world.
Although most people recognised him from his role as Charles Emerson Winchester III on the comedy M*A*S*H, journalists visiting The Dead Zone were strongly advised not to bring up “the M word” when interviewing him!
