Peter Wyngarde, who starred in writer Jason King in ITC’s Department S and the character’s own series, has died.

Wyngarde started acting professionally shortly after the Second World War and was seen on stage and screen over the next three decades. His roles included Peter Quint in the 1961 film of The Innocents, and during the 1960s appeared in many of the genre and thriller series such as The Avengers and The Saint, including one episode as Number 2 in The Prisoner’s Checkmate.

In 1980, he appeared as Klytus in the cult hit Flash Gordon, and joined Peter Davison’s penultimate Doctor Who story, Planet of Fire in 1984.
