Paddy Russell, whose directing career included some highly revered classic Doctor Who stories, has died aged 89.

Russell is best known to genre fans for her work on Doctor Who – directing The Massacre, which featured a double performance by William Hartnell; Invasion of the Dinosaurs for Jon Pertwee’s final season; Pyramids of Mars, starring Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen – her favourite of the quartet; and Horror of Fang Rock with Baker and Louise Jameson, which had to be shot at Pebble Mill, rather than Doctor Who’s usual London studio. She also directed Jameson in the opening episode of The Omega Factor, and helmed an episode of Out of the Unknown. Earlier in her career she was a production assistant on The Quatermass Experiment.
