Highly esteemed American character actor Harry Dean Stanton has died of natural causes aged 91.
Hailed as the quintessential American actor by The Hollywood Reporter, Stanton went into acting after serving in the US Navy during the Second World War. He appeared in over a hundred films, including many cult classics on large and small screens such as Alien, Escape from New York, Repo Man, The Green Mile and Twin Peaks.
David Lynch’s statement sums up many of the tributes paid:
Harry Dean Stanton had such an amazing chameleon quality. He could do anything and it never felt like he was acting. He WAS the character and made so many pictures stronger and more believable with his presence. He will be missed!
Even Harry’s small role as Toot in The Green Mile felt very significant. R.I.P., Harry.
