Science fiction author Jerry Pournelle has died, aged 84.

The news was announced by his son Alex: “I’m afraid that Jerry passed away. We had a great time at DragonCon. He did not suffer.”

Pournelle was involved with the Apollo space program, as well as the Strategic Defense Initiative (aka the Star Wars program). His first novel was published in 1968, and since then he received 5 Hugo and 3 Nebula Nominations, and was the first winner of the Campbell Award. He authored or co-authored at least seven US best-sellers, including Lucifer’s Hammer by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, with other key work including The Mote in God’s Eye and Footfall (both with Niven).
