In the aftermath of the Axanar lawsuit and the new guidelines brought in by CBS regarding fan films, the studio has licensed a Star Trek fan film academy.
Star Trek New Voyages’ James Cawley will be in charge, with the aim being for fans to “learn the art of Star Trek filmmaking from those who made it.” The week long course will cover the entirety of putting on a production “from gaffing to costuming to special effects. Fans will work side by side with talented Star Trek artists to create short vignettes from beginning to end.” Star Trek professionals including Mike and Denise Okuda, Doug Drexler and Daren Dochterman are expected to take part, since they will not be covered by the ban on Trek professionals in the fan film guidelines.
The academy will start business in the autumn, with the first class and their fan films expected in Spring 2018, all using the New Voyages sets and production facilities in New York state.
