Adam West, who played Batman for over 50 years, has died aged 88.

According to a statement, he passed away from leukemia. “A true American icon and beloved father and husband, he will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and millions of fans around the world,” the spokesperson said. The family added: “Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight, and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero.”

West is best known for playing the Caped Crusader in the 1960s TV series, a role that he reprised for the big screen during the production of the show, in an animated series, and in a recent animated film, alongside Burt Ward as Dick Grayson/Robin.

His other genre work included Robinson Crusoe on Mars as well as a recurring role as Mayor Adam West on Family Guy.
