Peter Sallis, the voice of Wallace in the Aardman Animation films, has died aged 96.

The veteran actor was probably best known for being the only original cast member to be in all the seasons of the long running comedy Last of the Summer Wine (as well as playing his character’s father in the prequel series). He had many roles in genre shows, including as scientist Penley in the 1967 Doctor Who story The Ice Warriors. Other small screen appearances included Danger Man, Catweazle, The Persuaders, Frankenstein: The True Story and The Ghosts of Motley Hall. For cinema, he was in The Curse of the Werewolf, Mouse on the Moon, Taste the Blood of Dracula and the Wallace and Gromit movie Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

He originally played Wallace for Nick Park’s student film, and continued voicing the character between 1983 and 2010.
