A special Halloween screening of The Addams Family with live orchestra is one of the headline features in the Royal Albert Hall’s Festival of Film for 2017, alongside a celebration of Michael Giacchino’s music to mark the composer’s 50th birthday.
The venue’s second Festival of Film includes a special Halloween treat: the world premiere orchestral screening of classic 1991 comedy, The Addams Family, with John Williams’ iconic score for Steven Spielberg’s Jaws played live in its entirety for the first time ever in the UK, as the centrepiece of the Festival of Film in October. This special production also includes classic Williams music omitted from the original movie, but now restored in full.
Lucy Noble, Artistic Director at the Royal Albert Hall, said: “After the success of last year’s inaugural Festival of Film, we’re delighted to present an even bigger, better programme for 2017. From Jaws to the work of James Horner, a 70-piece orchestra to a silent disco, and MGM musicals to hip-hop for kids, there’s something for everyone.
“Though the Hall’s programme is the most diverse in the country, we’re synonymous with great music, and this groundbreaking festival looks to bring film music centre-stage where it truly belongs.”
Jaws in Concert will reinstate three superb pieces of music written by John Williams for the 1975 film, but ultimately excised from the finished product. These have been restored to the movie with the permission of Spielberg and the composer.
James Horner: A Life in Music is a world premiere, with the Cinematic Sinfonia performing the composer’s greatest music, including Braveheart, Titanic, Glory, Field of Dreams, Avatar and Aliens. Horner made one of his final public appearances at the Hall for the film-and-live-orchestra debut of Titanic, two months before his untimely death.
The new Michael Giacchino show, celebrating his 50th birthday, will include highlights from Rogue One, Lost, The Incredibles, Star Trek, Inside Out, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and, of course, Up, the instant classic for which he won an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Grammy and a Golden Globe.
Lucy Noble noted: “We’ve celebrated Michael’s incredible music before, with Pixar in Concert and Star Trek Live, but this is the first time – anywhere – that the highlights of his remarkable career will have been brought together for one unmissable show.
“It’s a huge honour for us to welcome Michael to the Hall for this special, one-off celebration of his breathtaking work, which will showcase his originality, talent and gift for an unforgettable theme, and leave audiences in no doubt as to why he’s one of the most sought-after and important composers in Hollywood.”
The show will be hosted by TV personality and special effects whiz, Adam Savage (Mythbusters), presenting classic music from the likes of Star Trek, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Incredibles, Rogue One and Up, as well as the acclaimed video game, Medal of Honor, all conducted by film-and-live-orchestra supremo Ludwig Wicki (Jurassic Park Live).
Other highlights include Comedians Cinema Club bringing their riotous, improv-heavy show back to the Hall’s Elgar Room, James Newton Howard appearing in the regular BAFTA Conservations with Screen Composers strand, film-themed shows in the popular Late Night Jazz and Classical Coffee Mornings, and a soundtrack silent disco in the Loading Bay.
Meanwhile, in I Can See the Future, an exhibition of vintage movie posters investigates sci-fi visions of the future and their links to the music of David Bowie.
