Denis Villeneuve’s SF drama Arrival has gained nine nominations for the 2017 BAFTA Awards.
The movie is up for Best Film, Director, Leading Actress, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Sound and Special Visual Effects.
It’s not the only genre movie in the shortlists, announced on January 10. Fantastic Beasts… is nominated for Outstanding British Film, Best Production Design, Costume, Spoecial Visual Effects and Sound; The Girl With All the Gifts is in contention for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer; and Marvel’s Doctor Strange is also in the running for Best Production Design, as well as Best Special Visual Effects and Best Makeup/Hair – for which Rogue One receives a nomination too.
The Best Special Visual Effects will be fought between Arrival, Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts, The Jungle Book and Rogue One.
The winners will be announced at a ceremony on 12 February at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The full list can be read here
