watership-downRichard Adams, creator of Watership Down, Shardik and The Plague Dogs, has died aged 96.

Adams was a civil servant who wrote in his spare time until Watership Down – based on stories he told his daughters – was finally published in 1972. His tale about a group of rabbits was the basis for a popular animated movie, as well as a TV series, and various radio adaptations (including one earlier this year by Brian Sibley). His other work includes the horror novel The Girl in a Swing, Maia (a prequel to Shardik), and the historical novel Traveller, which tells the story of the American Civil War from the viewpoint of Robert E Lee’s horse.
