Greg Berlanti and Salim Akil & Mara Brock Akil have sold their adaptation of the character created by Tony Isabella and Trevor von Eedeen in 1977, who was one of the first African American superheroes in the DC universe. The project has been in development at Warner Bros. TV for over a year.

In this version, written by the Akils, school principal Jefferson Pierce hung up his superhero suit years ago but “with a daughter hell-bent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as wanted vigilante and DC superhero Black Lightning”.
