It looks as if time travel shows will be the new craze next season, after various networks announced their pick-ups.
ABC has given a series order to Time After Time, based on the Nick Meyer movie and the novel upon which it was based. Josh Bowman and Freddie Storma star in the story of HG Wells’ pursuit of Jack the Ripper to the present day.
The CW has ordered Frequency, which is also based on a previous film. According to the official release, “a female police detective in 2016 discovers she is able to speak via a ham radio with her estranged father (also a detective) who died in 1996. They forge a new relationship while working together on an unresolved murder case, but unintended consequences of the ‘butterfly effect’ wreak havoc in the present day.” Riley Smith, Mekhi Phifer, Peyton List, Lenny Jacobson, Anthony Ruivivar, Devin Kelley and Daniel Bonjour star.
The CW also has Legends of Tomorrow, although without Wentworth Miller as a series regular. He will become a regular across the Berlanti DC shows, appearing on The Flash and Legends. “Every year for this show people should expect a new adventure,” Berlanti told Deadline. “There will be new teammates, a new big bad. Mixing and matching things is part of the fun of the show.”
Fox are also getting in on the act with time travel comedy Making History. Described as “two shows in one, both a rollicking historical adventure and a contemporary comedy about love, friendship, and trying to fit into an increasingly complex and impersonal world,” it stars Adam Pally, Leighton Meester, and Yassir Lester as three friends from two different centuries as they try to balance the thrill of time travel with the mundane concerns of their everyday lives.
