With four extra awards at the Primetime Emmys to add to the eight it won at the Creative Emmys last week, HBO’s Game of Thrones has set a new bar for the highest number of such awards in a single year.
The previous holder was The West Wing with nine, but David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ writing award, and David Nutter’s directing accolade took them to ten, with Peter Dinklage’s Best Supporting Actor and the overall Best Drama Emmys sealing the deal.
Along with Olive Kitteridge’s six Primetime Emmys, it helped propel HBO to 43 Emmys across the board, with NBC, its nearest rival, only gaining 12.
