Twenty years after hardened London film critics were spotted looking up at the skies just in case after a preview of Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin’s Independence Day, the sequel will finally be hitting cinemas.
Independence Day Resurgence will be released on June 24, 2016, and feature Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Brent Spiner, Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch reprising their roles from the original alongside Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe and Sela Ward. Speaking at a streaming press conference, Emmerich explained that in the two decades since “The War of ’96” the human race has joined forces to organize a global defence system using alien technology to preempt future invasions.
Goldblum’s David Levinson is the director of the new initiative. “It’s my job to lead the way in making sure everyone is safe on this precious planet. Having faced that last challenge, we’re all working in a beautiful way… Borders are no longer relevant in the same way, and that’s a very beautiful idea.”
Maika Monroe plays the daughter of Bill Pullman’s President from the first film, while Liam Hemsworth is Jake, a fighter pilot who’s made a mistake and is now working on a moon base. Jessie Usher plays the son of Will Smith’s character, who is raised by Fox; the actress praised the strength of the character in the script.
