David Bowie is writing new songs for a musical version of his 1976 movie The Man Who Fell to Earth.
Bowie is co-writing with Irish playwright Enda Walsh, who recently won a Tony Award for the musical Once. The show, Lazarus, is inspired by the original 1963 novel, The Man Who Fell to Earth, by Walter Tevis, and will focus on the character of Thomas Newton, played by Bowie in Nicolas Roeg’s film. The show will be directed by the Belgian Ivo van Hove.
Lazarus will begin performances at the New York Theater Workshop in Winter 2015. The theatre explained that the show “features songs specially composed by Mr. Bowie for this production as well as new arrangements of previously recorded songs”.
