Simon Pegg, writer of the script for the next Star Trek movie, has described the process as “terrifying” in an interview with Collider.
The third film has to enter production in June which means the script must be finished by then “come hell or high water”, although Pegg does note that there are always tweaks during both filming and editing. “I have to abide by certain rules and do right by the original series, and not be too post-modern with it and not be too aware of itself,” he explained. “I have to try to take on the spirit of the show, rather than fill it with stuff that people will just go, ‘Oh, yeah, that’s from episode something or other.’ It’s more than that.”
Pegg came on board as writer following conversations with Bad Robot producer Bryan Burk during which the decision to “go back to the drawing board, a little bit, with the screenplay” came up. The Star Trek fan will be reprising his role as Scotty in the film which opens next year to mark the 50th anniversary of the original Star Trek.
