SpockLeonard Nimoy, who played Mr Spock on Star Trek for over half a century, has died, aged 83.

According to the New York Times, his wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, confirmed his death on the morning of February 27, saying the cause was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Nimoy was best known for the role of the half-Vulcan science officer, but played many different roles in his career, including Paris on Mission: Impossible. He had an ambivalent attitude towards his fame as Spock, with his autobiographies alternately called “I am Not Spock” and “I Am Spock”.

As well as working on film and TV, Nimoy had a successful stage career, and was well-regarded for his photography, mounting exhibitions of his work. His musical contributions were equally renowned, as much for their tongue in cheek element.

Nimoy returned to the role of Spock for JJ Abrams’ two movies, and was keen to promote the continuation of the Star Trek story, happy to discuss the films at length.
