Disney’s animation Big Hero 6 won all five of its categories at the Visual Effects Society awards held on February 4th, including Outstanding Animation.
Its other triumphs were for Outstanding Models in any Motion Media Project, Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Animated Feature Motion Picture, and Outstanding Animated Character in an Animated Feature Motion Picture for Baymax.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes also did very well, winning Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture, Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture and Outstanding Performance of an Animated Character in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture for Caesar.
X-Men: Days of Future Past was successful in the Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Photoreal/Live Action Motion Media Project, and Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture categories.
On the small screen, Game of Thrones won most awards, with Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Photoreal/Live Action Broadcast Program for the episode The Children, Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal/Live Action Broadcast Program for The Watchers on the Wall, and Outstanding Created Environment in a Commercial, Broadcast Program, or Video Game for the programme generally.
The special Visionary Award was given to JJ Abrams. This recognizes an individual who has uniquely and consistently employed the art and science of visual effects to “foster imagination and ignite future discoveries by way of artistry, invention and groundbreaking work.”
