Trek logoIt has been confirmed that Roberto Orci, one of the prime movers behind the reboot of the Star Trek universe in the 2009 film, will no longer be either writing or directing the thirteenth movie in the series, out in July 2016.

Fast and Furious franchise director Justin Lin has been brought in to direct the movie, the third to be set in the new timeline. It had originally been believed that he would be working from the script co-written by Orci, despite rumours that Paramount disagreed with the time travel element of the script in which Vulcans apparently tried to travel back to prevent the destruction of their planet at the hands of Nero (and which might have permitted William Shatner and Chris Pine’s versions of Kirk to meet).

Orci has stated on the Trekmovie.com discussion board that “I’m producing, Nothing more or less.”
