In an interview promoting the new Doctor Who Christmas Special in the Radio Times for week of 13th December, now hitting shops, Doctor Who head writer Steven Moffat has confirmed that Missy aka the Master should be back for Series 9.
Although he noted that he’s hesitant about giving too much away in case it becomes “part of the plan that falls apart”, he did note that he had invited Michelle Gomez to return, pointing out that no one who knows the SF genre really believed she had died at the end of Death in Heaven.
However, he gave no indication whether Jenna Coleman will be reprising her role as Clara beyond the special; the Daily Mirror recently reported that she would be back for part of Series 9 but there has been no official confirmation either from the actress or the BBC.
The issue also includes an interview with Nick Frost, and Moffat’s description of the episode as “The Thing meets Miracle on 34th Street”, and noting that of all his Christmas specials, “it’s the one most like the paradigm Doctor Who episode”.
