Scary_Stories_to_Tell_in_the_Dark_coverFrankenweenie and Big Fish writer John August has been tapped by CBS Films to write their adaptation of the popular US book series, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, according to a report at Deadline.

The original three books, described as containing “stories collected from folklore and retold” by Alvin Schwartz appeared between 1981 and 1991 and achieved the accolade of being the “most challenged series of books” between 1990 and 1999 – i.e. there were more attempts to remove them from library shelves than any other single book or series. (Huckleberry Finn came fifth during that same period; Of Mice and Men was sixth.) Each volume contains over two dozen short scary stories.

The illustrations by Stephen Gammell were also highly acclaimed, although they were replaced for the most recent reprinting of the book.
