According to a report at Deadline, Sherlock and Star Trek Into Darkness star Benedict Cumberbatch will be playing the Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange, in the new Marvel movie.

Joaquin Phoenix had been in the frame for the part, but negotiations didn’t progress; other names connected to the role include Jared Leto and Tom Hardy.

Cumberbatch has not yet signed to play the character, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The movie is written by Jon Spaihts and will be directed by Scott Derrickson.
