City of DeathBritish director Michael Hayes, whose genre work included A for Andromeda and the classic Doctor Who story City of Death, has died aged 85.

Hayes initially performed as an actor but switched to directing, giving Julie Christie her first major role as the star of A for Andromeda, the seminal BBC SF series from 1961. As well as the Paris-based City of Death, he also helmed The Androids of Tara and The Armageddon Factor for Doctor Who and the BBC’s version of Tales from the Thousand and One Nights, penned by former Doctor Who script editor Victor Pemberton.

His final directing job was the thriller Skorpion in 1983, after which he joined the BBC World Service as a newsreader.
