Fairy TaleMultiple award winning British author Graham Joyce has died aged 59.

Much loved by members of the writing community, Joyce had been suffering from cancer in recent times – a BBC radio documentary featured him less than a month ago – and had been due to start fresh treatment.

Of his work he said, “I belong to the tradition that looks for the magical in human beings, not for human beings in the magical.” His first novel Dreamside was followed by six British Fantasy Award winners, including most recently Some Kind of Fairy Tale. He also played in goal for the English Writers XI.

Paying tribute, Stephen King wrote on Twitter, “Very sad to hear that Graham Joyce, a truly great novelist, has passed away. Too soon. Far too soon.” Joe Hill counselled followers to “Read anything Graham Joyce ever wrote. You will find wisdom, decency, fierce intelligence, and wonders beyond counting.”

His last post on his website, entitled  A Perfect Day And The Shocking Clarity Of Cancer concluded, “why can’t our job here on earth be simply to inspire each other?”
