Rains of CastamereIn an upset at the 2014 Hugo Awards, Doctor Who was beaten by Game of Thrones for the Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form).

There were six nominations on the ballot with Who represented on four of them – the 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, and the series 7 closer The Name of the Doctor; An Adventure in Space and Time; and Peter Davison’s comedy film The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. Game of Thrones’ The Rains of Castamere and Orphan Black’s Variations under Domestication were the other potential award-winners.

Game of Thrones’ victory came as a surprise to many commentators, some of whom suggested that the preponderance of potential Who choices may have split the vote.

A full Hugo Awards report will be posted later.

  1. The Hugos use a transferable vote system, so the Doctor Who vote couldn’t have been split (in fact the series usually benefits from having multiple episodes nominated). Is it really beyond the wit of Who fans to imagine that their favourite series could be beaten to an award on merit?
