book-cover-the-shining-lrgMark Romanek, who directed the pilot of Locke & Key, based on the comic book series by Joe Hill, seems set to helm The Overlook Hotel, a prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s classic horror movie The Shining.

The script for the movie was written by former Walking Dead producer Glen Mazzara, and is based on the prologue to Stephen King’s book, which was cut from the book before it was released in 1977. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “The film will tell the origin story of the haunted hotel through the eyes of its first owner, Bob T. Watson, a robber baron at the turn of the 20th century.”

In addition to the Kubrick version, there was a TV miniseries based on King’s novel, with a script by King himself. For many years, King did not hide his distaste for the earlier movie. Asked about the prequel in April 2013, he noted, “Am I eager to see that happen? No I am not.” King produced his own sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep, last year (read our review here).
