constantine-zedSpeaking at the Television Critics Association tour on July 13, the producers of NBC’s new version of Constantine explained their reasoning behind the departure of Lucy Griffiths from the series.

Griffiths was playing the character of Liv, created for the TV version, and Daniel Cerone noted, “Pilots are great because they’re a bit of a litmus test, we get to figure out what works and what doesn’t… Liv is a great character, she’s wide-eyed, she’s reactive, [but] we felt a bit hamstrung by her, frankly.”

She will be replaced by Angélica Celaya as Zed – presumed to be the comics character Mary “Zed” Martin, who is Constantine’s lover.  “Zed is intuitive, she can detect bullshit,” Cerone explained, which will be handy, as he sees Constantine as a “bullshit artist”.

The pilot will not be reshot to accommodate the change of personnel, since “characters drop around [Constantine] like flies”, according to David S. Goyer.
