GoT 4With nineteen nominations in total, HBO’s Game of Thrones leads the board for the 2014 Emmy Awards announced on July 10, with American Horror Story: Coven not far behind.

It is the only genre nominee in the Best Drama category but has no-one up for either Best Actor or Actress. Peter Dinklage has a Best Supporting Actor nomination, with Lena Headey in the corresponding Best Supporting Actress. Diana Rigg’s appearance as Lady Olena Tyrell has earned her an Outstanding Guest Actress nomination, and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’ script for The Children is up for Outstanding Writing on a Drama Series. Neil Marshall’s direction of The Watchers on the Wall has been recognised, and the network’s interactive team gets a nod for their coverage of the season premiere. Other nominations including Outstanding Casting, and two separate episodes of Outstanding Cinematography; Outstanding Costumes; Outstanding Hairstyling; Outstanding Non-Prosthetic and Prosthetic Make-Up; Outstanding Music; Outstanding Sound Editing; Outstanding Sound Mixing; Outstanding Special and Visual Effects; Outstanding Stunt Coordination;

American Horror Story: Coven also has a respectable number of nominations in the Miniseries/Movie categories: as well as featuring in the list for Best Miniseries/Movie, Jessica Lange and Sarah Paulson are both nominated for Best Actress, and Frances Conroy, Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett all up for the Best Supporting Actress. Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuck’s script for Bitchcraft is in the list for Outstanding Writing on a Miniseries/Movie, as is Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s direction of that episode. The series is also up for Outstanding Art Direction on a period piece, Outstanding Casting, Outstanding Costumes, Outstanding Hairstyling; Outstanding Make-Up – both Prosthetic and Non-Prosthetic; Outstanding Music; Outstanding Sound Editing; Outstanding Sound Mixing

Despite the number of categories where both are recognised, the two series only go head to head for the Outstanding Prosthetic Make-Up award.
