predator-1987Shane Black, who gave the Marvel universe a shot in the arm with his well-judged Iron Man 3, is set to write and direct a continuation of the Predator franchise for Fox.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story noting that Black will write the treatment for the new movie, but the script will be written by Fred Dekker. The first film appeared in 1987 with a sequel showing up three years later, and a belated continuation in 2010; the creatures also battled the xenomorphs in two Alien vs Predator films. Black himself played Hawkins in the original film.

The Reporter’s story noted that this would be a reboot of the franchise, but subsequent interviews with Black by Collider.com confirmed that both he and Dekker regard it as a continuation. “Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?” he asked, noting he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button”.
