GatewayAccording to a report at Deadline, Frederick Pohl’s classic SF novel Gateway is finally coming to the screen.

Entertainment One Television and De Laurentiis Co. have teamed up to produce the serial version of the multi-award winning 1977 novel, which spawned various sequels as well as a computer game adaptation. The story focuses on young miner Robinette “Rob” Broadhead who travels on a one-way ticket from Earth for the extremely dangerous mission of piloting one of thousands of abandoned alien space crafts on Gateway, a space station created by the Heechee, an apparently long-dead race. The technology of these alien ships is not fully understood, with most trips resulting in death. The reward for a rare successful return, however, can be untold riches, so crews continue to sign up despite the desperate odds.

“It is an absolute, complete, desperate gamble with very high stakes that attracts all those desperate people to a border town,” De Laurentiis’ Lorenzo De Maio told Deadline. No writer or showrunner has yet been assigned to the project.
