Four years after its last triumph, Doctor Who has once again been voted Best Drama at the National Television Awards, voted for by the public, and handed out at the 02 Arena in London on January 22nd.
The series beat off competition from Broadchurch, Downton Abbey, and Call the Midwife. The award was collected by current companion, Jenna Coleman, who said: “Fifty years and still going strong. Well done Who!” Thanking everyone who voted, she pointed out “this award absolutely belongs to the team, the cast and crew who are grafting away in Cardiff as we speak; the genius and mastermind that is Moff; and of course Matt Smith.”
Outgoing Doctor Matt Smith also won Best Actor, triumphing over Martin Clunes, Maggie Smith and Miranda Hart. “It is an honour to be in the same category as such fine, esteemed and wondrous actors,” Smith said in a recorded message, as he was appearing on stage at the Almeira in the production of American Psycho. Thanking those who voted, he added, “You made my time on Who the best and most brilliant and most audacious part of my career to date.” Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat collected the award on his behalf.
