Star Trek animatedAnimation director Hal Sutherland, whose signature graced the end titles of the animated version of Star Trek, has passed away, according to a post on the Filmation Facebook page.

Sutherland worked for Disney on Sleeping Beauty, and then teamed up with Lou Scheimer on Bozo the Clown TV shorts. The pair then joined with Norm Prescott to form Filmation, working on a feature length sequel to The Wizard of Oz, which took over a decade to complete, as well as multiple series. These included The Adventures of Superman and Star Trek, for which his son Keith provided the voice of the young Spock in Yesteryear.

Sutherland remained as a consultant for Filmation after his semi-retirement in 1974, and continued to direct for them. His last credited work was Happily Ever After, a sequel to Sleeping Beauty which he completed in 1988, but wasn’t released until 1993.

He spent his retirement years concentrating on his artwork, which can be viewed here at his official site.
