beowulf1The US Syfy Channel is working on an adaptation of the Old English epic poem, Beowulf.

Matt Greenberg, best known for his reworking of Stephen King’s short story ‘1408’ into the movie with John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, is penning the script, which will be produced for Omni and Universal Cable Productions. Brian Hamilton, Michael Chechik, Andrew Cosby, Paulo de Oliveira and Greenberg will executive produce.

The story of Beowulf’s battle to help the Danes against the monstrous Grendel and its mother dates from between the 8th and 11th centuries, and is regarded as one of the most important works of Anglo-Saxon literature. It formed the basis for a 2007 motion-capture movie, as well as the episode Heroes and Demons on Star Trek: Voyager and the recent Doctor Who audio Black and White.
