ScheimerLou Scheimer, described as one of the “fathers of Saturday morning television” has died, shortly before his 84th birthday.

Scheimer was one of the founders of Filmation Associates, which was responsible for Journey Back to Oz, one of the first sequels to The Wizard of Oz, which starred Judy Garland’s daughter Liza Minnelli as the voice of Dorothy. They produced multiple cartoon series including animated Adventures of Superman, Tarzan, Flash Gordon,  and Batman, as well as He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and She-Ra. They are perhaps best known abroad for their two-season continuation of the Star Trek series in animated form.

Sci-Fi Bulletin contributor Andy Mangels recently penned a history of the studio, Creating the Filmation Generation.
