red_brick_roadAlthough it seems as if it’s yet another project jumping on the current Oz bandwagon, Lifetime’s new proposed series Red Brick Road has been around for some time.

Deadline’s report notes that Red Brick Road is written by Tim Schlattman (Dexter) based on an concept by artist Rob Prior, and is described as an edgy Game of Thrones-type take on the Oz mythos. “In the classic 1939 feature, when Dorothy set off for the Emerald City, she followed the Yellow Brick Road. But among the yellow bricks at Dorothy’s feet, there was also a swirl of red bricks. They’ve been there the whole time in plain sight. Unnoticed. Unexplored. Which raises the question — just where do they go? Red Brick Road will answer that by following Dorothy down that fateful path, taking her to the oldest, darkest and most dangerous parts of Oz to find what became of her friends who all have gone missing.”

This makes it clear that Red Brick Road – unlike most of the other proposed Oz series – is based on the world created in the 1939 film, rather than the universe as envisaged by Oz creator L. Frank Baum. Lifetime has placed the project in development where it will become a potential rival for NBC’s Emerald City (also described as Oz meets Game of Thrones); CBS’ medical drama Dorothy; the CW’s Dorothy Must Die; and Syfy’s Warriors of Oz.
