GordonA pre-Batman pre-Commissioner James Gordon is going to be the central character of a new TV spin-off from the Batman franchise, courtesy of Warner Bros. TV and the Fox network, according to a report at Deadline.

Gotham has been devised by The Mentalist‘s Bruno Heller, and will explore the early years of the character before he encounters the Batman. Jim Gordon will still be part of the Gotham City Police Department in the show, and the series will follow his story, as well as some of the villains who made Gotham famous.

One of the first supporting characters created for the mythos, Gordon has appeared on screen alongside the Batman previously; in the TV series he was played by Neil Hamilton, with Pat Hingle taking the part for the 1980s/1990s movie series. Gary Oldman portrayed a younger Gordon in the Christian Bale series. Various actors have provided the voice for animated renditions, including Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston.
