Capaldi12Actor Peter Capaldi was named as the twelfth actor to play the lead in Doctor Who tonight (Sunday 4 August) in a live showbiz extravaganza broadcast around the world.

Capaldi is best know for his career-defining role as foul-mouthed Westminster spin doctor in The Thick of It and spin-off film In The Loop, and recently played a Doctor from WHO (the World Health Organisation) in zombie blockbuster World War Z alongside Brad Pitt. As well as acting, Capaldi is an Oscar winner as a director for Best Live Action Short Film for Franz Kafka’s It’s a Wonderful Life in 1995.

He’s the oldest actor to take the role since the original, William Hartnell, in 1963.

Capaldi said: “It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer. But it has been absolutely fantastic in its own way, so many wonderful things have been happening. It was quite hard because even though I’m a lifelong Doctor Who fan, I haven’t played Doctor Who since I was nine in the playground. I downloaded the old scripts from the internet and read those. I think Malcolm [Tucker] has been banished from the mirror by this Doctor Who, who certainly would not put up with any of Malcolm’s language or attitude.”

The special live broadcast was seen in America on BBC America, in Canada on Space Canada and in Australia on ABC1 simultaneously with the BBC1 broadcast in the UK.

Filming of the new series of Doctor Who, including the regeneration focused Christmas special, is scheduled to begin in October. A 50th anniversary special episode is expected to air on Saturday 23 November.
