While for many the show is not what it was, HBO has renewed its vampire drama True Blood for a seventh season. The show is currently halfway through its 10 episode sixth season. The new episodes will air in the summer of 2014.
Executive producer Brian Bruckner will return as show runner having taken over the position from the series’ creator Alan Ball for the sixth season. The season six premiere attracted 4.5 million viewers, down from the 5.2 million who watched the fifth season premiere (which aired opposite an NBA finals game).
‘True Blood remains a signature show for HBO, and a true phenomenon with our viewers,’ said HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo. ‘Thanks to Brian Buckner and his talented team, the show continues to be a thrill ride like nothing else on TV.’
Author Charlaine Harris recently drew to a close the Stookie Stackhouse series of novels that inspired the True Blood TV show, although the show has diverted largely from the novels.
