Disney and Lucasfilm have confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII is to be shot in the UK, taking advantage of new tax relief arrangements recently put in place by the UK Government. Four out of the previous six Star Wars films were filmed largely in the UK, with two of the prequel films shooting in Australia to take advantage of similar tax advantages—although even parts of those movies saw ‘pick up’ filming take place in the UK.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said: “We’ve devoted serious time and attention to revisiting the origins of Star Wars as inspiration for our process on the new movie, and I’m thrilled that returning to the UK for production and utilising the incredible talent there can be a part of that. Speaking from my own longstanding connection to the UK with films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire of the Sun and recently War Horse, it’s very exciting to be heading back.”
Previous Star Wars movies have been filmed at a variety of UK studios, from Elstree (where the George Lucas Stage is located) to Pinewood, Shepperton and Ealing. Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace was shot at Leavesden Studios, which went on to become the home of the Harry Potter series of films.
Star Wars: Episode VII is due for release in 2015.
