Although the appointment of Brian Minchin as executive producer would seem to indicate that new episodes to form series 8 are definitely on the cards, fans may be a little surprised by a story in the new Doctor Who Magazine, out in the UK for subscribers today, and on general sale tomorrow.
“Doctor Who is due to resume later in the year for the 2013 Christmas Special, and possibly further episodes,” concludes the news report on the Anniversary Special (our italics). This sits slightly oddly next to head writer Steven Moffat’s comment to Entertainment Weekly (quoted in the story) that the 50th anniversary story has “actually got to be the start of a new story.”
Unusually, there are no discussions of other stories in the pipeline. However, the tone of Minchin’s statements yesterday would seem to suggest that more than just the Christmas Special is planned.
Update 11 a.m.: DWM Editor Tom Spilsbury has just tweeted: “We’re waiting for official confirmation of the next series’ commission from the BBC, but I’d imagine it will come soon.”

I read it that the “possibly” bit was referring to whether any more new eps would be made THIS YEAR beyond the Xmas special. If you read it with that intention in mind then it does sort of work though it could have been written much clearer. I don’t think they’re killing the golden goose yet. They do seem determined to make as few eps per year as possible, with a Christmas ep every 5-8 episodes.
I wonder if the uncertainty was caused by the decision over the new executive producer. As I said at the start, this has almost certainly be superseded by events yesterday, but it does seem odd.
