The Zygons—who have appeared in only one story, opposite Fourth Doctor Tom Baker in Terror of the Zygons—have been officially announced as making a return in Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary special episode, set to be broadcast on BBC1 this November.
Although they have appeared in spin-off comic strips and novels, and were mentioned in passing by the Eleventh Doctor in The Power of Three and by River Song in The Pandorica Opens, the Zygons have never been seen on screen again since their 1975 single appearance.
Although fans have long called for the return of these iconic monsters, it is doubtful whether general viewers will remember them as well, resulting in speculation that they are just the first of a hoard of returning monsters to be lined up for appearances in the 50th anniversary special.
