Spoilers for episode 6!

According to creator Toby Whithouse, an extra scene on the DVD – which they were contractually obliged to provide – will give a clearer explanation of the ambiguous ending to the series.

The final episode of series 5 concluded with a panning shot which could suggest that our heroes weren’t as triumphant as they initially thought. In an interview with SFX, Whithouse reveals that the extra scene is set some time after the closing titles of the episode, and “after that the answer is pretty definitive… If you believe that the characters are stuck in one of Captain Hatch’s dreams it’s quite a bleak ending. And so if that’s your take on that last scene then that’s a bit of a bleak way to leave five years of the show, so the DVD scene will address that.”

The DVDs / Blu-rays go on sale on April 8.
