Raymond Cusick, who gave the Daleks their distinctive iconic design which has remained pretty constant throughout Doctor Who’s fifty year history, died on February 21st, aged 84.
As a BBC employee at the time the Daleks were created in 1963, Cusick did not receive anything more than his standard salary for the work translating Terry Nation’s script into reality, apart from a small ex gratia payment.
He worked as production designer on a number of Doctor Who serials including The Keys of Marinus and Planet of Giants in addition to the Dalek stories, as well as other prestigious BBC series such as The Pallisers and The Duchess of Duke Street.
He appeared on Doctor Who Confidential in 2008, talking about his time on the classic series.
