10th PlanetOne of the most critical missing episodes from Doctor Who’s history is to be animated for its release on DVD later this year.

Episode 4 of The Tenth Planet no longer exists in the BBC Archive, although there are some clips from it which were used as part of a reconstruction on the VHS release of the story. It’s important, as it’s William Hartnell’s last regular appearance in the series (he returned for the 10th anniversary story The Three Doctors) – the regeneration sequence itself does exist, and hopefully this will be incorporated into the animation.

The work will be done using the same animation method as the recent release of The Reign of Terror. It’s currently scheduled for late 2013, although last year Dan Hall did note that he had a very special release in mind for the anniversary itself.
