Star_Wars_Logo_svgDisney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed (in a business-focused interview with CNBC) that there will be several Star Wars spin-off movies alongside the already planned new trilogy of Star Wars VII, VIII and IX. Director J.J. Abrams has been confirmed for Episode VII, with a screenplay from Toy Story 3’s Michael Arndt.

“There has been speculation about some stand-alone films that have been in development,” said Iger, in response to recent rumours of a Yoda-based movie in development at Lucasfilm/Disney. “I can confirm that in fact we are working on a few stand-alone films.”

In addition, Iger confirmed that writers Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back) and Simon Kinberg are working on those character based movies. As well a possible Yoda movie, there is speculation that Joe Johnston (Captain America: The First Avenger, The Rocketeer) may helm a movie based around Boba Fett, a character he help design for The Empire Strikes Back.

“Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. We still plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and IX, roughly over a six-year period of time starting in 2015, but there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too.”
