The latest American big budget version of Godzilla will be stomping our way in 3D on May 14, 2014, Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures have announced, marking the 60th anniversary of the monster’s first appearance on the silver screen.

Monsters’ Gareth Edwards is directing the script by David Callaham (The Expendables films), David S. Goyer (the Dark Knight trilogy) and Max Borenstein (The Seventh Son), which is described as returning the franchise to its roots with a gritty, realistic action film. The film is being made in partnership with Toho Films who own the rights, and will release the movie in Japan.

The most recent high-profile version of the classic Japanese monster came from Roland Emmerich in 1998; comics company IDW has been producing a series of adventures over the last couple of years.
