In a move that will come as little surprise to those who have been monitoring the on-screen adventures of the Marvel superheroes, Avengers director Joss Whedon has been given a green light by ABC for his TV pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D.

The pilot will be written by Whedon, his brother Jed and Maurissa Tancharoen, with Joss set to direct if the schedule permits. Jeph Loeb and Jeffrey Bell will join the writers as executive producers.

S.H.I.E.L.D. (in the movie universe standing for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division) has been seen in most of the Marvel movies so far, and was key to the plot of The Avengers. Whether Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury will transfer to TV is as yet unknown.
