Talking to the Los Angeles Times, veteran actress Jessica Lange has revealed a few details about the role she’s playing in the second season of American Horror Story, subtitled Asylum.

This year, Lange will play Sister Jude, the head nun in charge of a mental institution for the criminally insane in the 1960s. She became a nun late in life, after “an unsavory incident and a tragic past,” according to Lange. “She’s strict, and a hard taskmaster, but she’s very conflicted.” Part of her past includes a period as a nightclub perfomer in the 1940s, which means Lange has to perform a song and dance number

She maintains that both last year and this, she has been delighted with the roles Ryan Murphy has given her. “I had no idea what the character would be or how it was going to work,” she explained. “But what swayed me was Ryan’s insistence that he was going to write a part that would be fascinating for me to play. There aren’t a lot of writers who promise you that. And I haven’t been disappointed at all.”

American Horror Story returns in the autumn on FX.
